Electoral Commission of Ghana Defends Voter Register Integrity Amid NDC Criticism

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has fired back at the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for spreading misinformation about the provisional voter register. Deputy Chairperson, Dr. Bossman Asare, has accused the NDC of exaggerating non-existent problems within the register.

The NDC had requested a forensic audit and re-exhibition of the voter register, citing discrepancies and potential irregularities. However, the EC declined this request, sparking tensions between the two entities.

Dr. Asare, speaking on Newsfile, emphasized that the EC has addressed all concerns raised by the NDC. He stated that the register is "robust" and "credible," and invited the NDC to discuss any outstanding issues.

"The Commission has made it very clear openly to the NDC, openly to the good people of Ghana, international partners that we have a register that is robust, that is credible," Dr. Asare said.

Dr. Asare highlighted that the 2016 voter register had more problems than the current one, yet the NDC did not raise significant objections at the time.

"We were trying to make the point that even in the 2016 register, there were more problems than what we are talking about now, but the NDC didn't raise any serious issues then," he noted.

The EC has reassured Ghanaians of its commitment to peaceful and credible elections in December. The dispute between the EC and NDC has raised concerns about trust and transparency in the electoral process.
