A 33-year-old Chinese man, Lu, was sentenced to six months in prison for accepting 25,000 yuan ($3,300) from his wife's lover, Liu, after catching them together in a hotel room.
In March 2021, Lu's suspicions led him to follow his wife, and he discovered her with Liu. After a confrontation, Lu accepted Liu's offer of compensation. However, Liu later filed a complaint against Lu, accusing him of extortion.
Lu believed his ex-wife orchestrated the complaint to gain an advantage in their custody battle over their daughter.
Initially, the District Court and Zibo Intermediate People's Court upheld the six-month sentence. But Lu persisted, and the Shandong Provincial High Court ordered a re-examination.
In a rehearing, the court cleared Lu, ruling that he had negotiated with Liu rather than coerced him. The judge deemed Liu's actions a violation of moral norms and public order.
