In a stunning turn of events, Ghanaian rapper Guru NKZ has emerged victorious in the University of Ghana's Student Representative Council (SRC) presidential elections. Alongside his running mate, Jeffery Adu-Yeboah, Guru secured an impressive 9,455 votes out of 18,659 valid votes cast, representing 50.7% of the total.
Guru's journey to the top was not without its challenges. Initially disqualified from the presidential race due to his non-residential status, which violated Article 30 of the SRC Constitution, Guru fought back with a petition against the SRC Electoral Commission. The Appeals Board unanimously overturned his disqualification with a 7-0 decision on September 15, 2024.
However, just a day before the elections, an Accra Circuit Court granted an interlocutory injunction against the conduct of the SRC election, challenging Guru's reinstatement. Despite this, the Electoral Commission proceeded with the online election as scheduled, and Guru's victory was announced on September 18, 2024.
The Road to Victory
Guru's campaign focused on tackling the many challenges faced by students at the university, including accommodation challenges, improved academic resources, and student representation in major university decisions. His message resonated with the student body, leading to his decisive win.
A New Era for University of Ghana Students
As Guru NKZ and Jeffery Adu-Yeboah prepare to take office, they carry with them the aspirations of thousands of University of Ghana students eager for progressive reforms and stronger advocacy for their rights and needs. Guru's entry into student politics marks a bold step in bridging the gap between entertainment and leadership.
